My research program is focused on the development and utilization of iPSC models of human lung disease to overcome a critical lack of model systems that closely reflect disease pathogenesis as it occurs in humans. One of the major limitations to studying human lung disease is limited access to primary airway epithelial cells and poor recapitulation of human disease in rodent models leading to fewer therapies making it to the clinic for lung disease.

New fellowship to support pulmonary disease research

Soula Danopoulos, PhD, has been named the first recipient of a postdoctoral fellowship from the Hastings Center for Pulmonary Research (HCPR) at the Keck School of Medicine of USC.
HCPR was established in 2014 with a gift from the Hastings Foundation and unites important basic and translational lung research with clinical care under a single umbrella at Keck Medicine of USC.

Gift boosts lung disease research at Keck School of Medicine of USC

Pioneering research on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of advanced lung disease is being strengthened at the Keck School of Medicine of USC thanks to generous support from the Hastings Foundation.

A new gift of $12.5 million renews the foundation’s commitment to the USC Hastings Center for Pulmonary Research, which it established in 2014 with a $7.5 million donation. Researchers at the center seek breakthroughs in the laboratory that can be translated into new and promising approaches for lung injury, repair and regeneration.
